The “big” vs “small” framing is a silly refuge for idiotic ideologues. We’re a very big, complex country with governance needs to match. Compared to other big nations, I’d grade us ahead of India but behind China. Catching up needs more govt, particularly in healthcare & energy, not less.

My grandfather and two uncles worked for D*P*nt. They all talked about being instructed to take trucks to dump in the waterways. They talked about how the water had a rainbow sheen like an oil spill. They're still settling cases.

Thank you for posting!! I was just muttering to myself, after seeing the photos in the original post, “doesn’t anyone remember the Cuyahoga River being on fire?!?!” It’s stunning that people don’t know that before the EPA a lot of America was filthy & polluted - & it wasn’t just poor areas affected

Thank you! We live above a small river & when we bought the house in 2000, there was still a pipe (no longer connected) running from bathroom to the river. We were told that in the 70s no one wanted to live by the river for obvs reasons. Even living through pre-EPA, the pipe was a shock & reminder

That’s an excellent idea. I keep thinking about the homes built on Loves Canal & how that could easily happen again without the EPA & other government guidelines/restrictions, especially in our continuing era of “greed is good”

Between the start of the industrial revolution and 1969, the Cuyahoga River in northeastern Ohio caught fire 13 separate times. Finally Congress passed the Clean Waters Act in 1970 which became the EPA the following year in 1971. We are not going back to flaming scenic rivers!

Safe bet the "invest a billion for no regulations", especially in regard to the EPA, is at least part of the quid pro quo for SissySpaceX.

His quest to own Mars, an uninhabitable planet, cannot be achieved under EPA regulations that protect Earth and its' people.

When I was in college in the early 80s, a friend from Cleveland used to talk about getting high and watching the Cuyahoga River burn. Another friend from Pittsburgh said they had to wear raincoats when walking downtown because you'd get covered in soot and other pollutants from the steel mills...
