Poor Ned has been unwell. His left eye had the third eyelid coming across but also the pupil has a cloudy reflection. The vet thinks it might be a virus and has given him antibiotic eyedrops and eyedrops to mend the cornea. Hoping it’s nothing worse. No obvious injury. Any ideas? #Caturday - ThreadSky

Our boy cat has the same. They were sure it was herpes (which the majority of cats have asymptomatically) but lab results came back with mycoplasma (drug resistant bacteria that acts like a fungus)

He's now quarantined and on lots of meds and trending better. I'm glad you are getting treatment!

Started cloudy then progressed pretty quickly to a visible ulcer in his cornea. In his case it went to 80% depth fast 🙀

The vets were casual about it at first. I'm sure this is because most cats get better just fine.

But yeah I'd be watching carefully & pushing for tests if he trends worse.

Thank you. They put a dye in his eye and there was no ulcer but it sounds like that doesn’t mean it might not come! We will keep a careful watch.

If he is hiding or if his eye has any goo that isn't white or clear I'd be running for tests.

Also we took photos every day to compare.

I don't mean to freak you out, I'm sure we were unlucky. But it's worth watching!

I had totally missed you had a cat now, he’s gorgeous!! 😻 Did the vet check for mild entropian?
FHV would spring to mind otherwise with those symptoms. The stress of moving to a new home can reactivate it if he’d been exposed before he was vaccinated.

Personally, if he was a kitten I’d bred I’d be suggesting you ask for a PCR swab to be done if the eye drops don’t clear it up quickly so you know exactly what you’re dealing with as certain infections, such as feline chlamydia, can require long courses of antibiotics.

I am pretty sure that the PCR can differentiate between active infection with chlamydia & antibodies from vaccinations if he’s been vaccinated against it - it’s not standard in vaccinations so some breeders do include it & some don’t.

No - we are new to all of this so very helpful. The vet did say that it could be the result of an infection like flu or FHV but didn’t offer to do any tests.
