It's hard not to imagine courts effectively saying "But we as a country need these contracts to hold or else the military falls apart, so for that reason it's not a beach of contract". They've done that sort of thing before, haven't they? (I am very much not a lawyer)

I feel like I can answer that. Veterans' health benefits weren't any part of any contract that I signed when I enlisted. They come from an entirely different body of law, passed out of a sense of noblesse oblige by a generation that didn't define itself by its contempt for all of humankind.
