One thing I’ve found pedagogically useful is to never quite give my students ALL the information, I just drop little bits of lore like bread crumbs

They pay much better attention that way and they retain what I teach them better too

early in my career I named this the “ex boyfriend effect”

I had noticed that the more stories I told about ex boyfriends, the better they did on their papers

I had no explanation at the time, so I did a bunch of research and best I could figure it had to do with the way the brain processes information in short chunks with rest breaks

so, short stories that got their attention, followed by curriculum, followed by another story, were more likely to get information from their short term to their long term memory

I never quite devised a way to test it, but my experience over time has born it out

Yeah, I think this is very real - I teach a niche instrument and I spend a lot of time teaching lore, composers, performers, background, partly because it matters but it builds a much stronger web of knowledge.

I still remember the steps to long division because our 5th grade math teacher started class by asking, "Do monkeys smell bad?" We debated for a while, decided no from monkeys' POV, until some kid asked how it was relevant to math class.

Do=Divide, Monkeys=Multiply, Smell=Subtract, Bad=Bring Down.

I do this a TON with my patients! I try to talk to them in relational terms instead of “teaching” terms. When they feel like you’re connecting with them & not patronizing them - you establish more trust, which yields better understanding!
