Oh yes. That was me. My first day at BYU, at the ripe old age of 16, I was trading tickets with other honors students so that I could attend the engineering banquet with a couple cute guys I'd just met. (English major here...)
I say Big Picture by the way because this urban-rural split is not limited or unique to the US.
I travel the world and I've seen it everywhere.
Egypt, for ex.
City dwellers are fed up w. military dictatorship, but Abdel el-Sisi enjoys wide support among the illiterate in rural regions.
Fucking hell.
In terms of the Big(ger) Picture, you've touched on an existential problem that's affecting everything from social politics to the economy — this sociological divide between urban centers (educated, informed, well-read) and rural regions (the exact opposite).
Don't know how this will, or can, end.
People think Salt Lake City is a lot more Mormon than it actually is. I used to go there every year for the AP history reading and people would say things like "I'm sure there's no alcohol on sale there." There's a bar every block! They had a lesbian mayor!
Isn't that curious! It's almost (though not quite) as curious as the righteousness of laughable liquor laws evaporating after Utah decided to make money on the Winter Olympics. Cin-cin!
Our capital is pretty left wing. We would have one house rep solidly Democrat if it weren't for the gerrymandering here. Look up the district map. They've literally carved the capital up into four pieces just to make sure they silence about half the state's voters. Whenever it comes to-- (1/2)
--ballot measures, the left wing measures pass 70-80% of the time. The rural parts are filled with bigots, but at least in the capital city, they care about other people. (2/2)
I think prejudiced people show a lack of empathy, compassion, and intelligence. What’s smart about being racist? NOTHING. Why can’t people treat others the way they would like to be treated? That’s what I taught my kids. I can say they’re not perfect, but nobody has gone to jail yet! ☮️💙💔🇺🇦🇺🇸
