It was never meant to be a democracy for all (slaves, women, non-landowners), only for "qualified citizens," and the college was the Trump card (pun intended) to ensure the "right" person won by applying the three-fifths clause to favor the Southern voting bloc

What's neat (spooky) is that there was a faction of framers who wanted president to be elected for life, which would have made him functionally a doge like the Republic of Venice had had for centuries: elected for life by wealthy elites but restrained by laws and institutions.
