I think its the reverse actually it got popular BECAUSE theres so many LADS players who like it so it became a trend and then left its audience. I still see people noticing and commenting its Sylus when its not an obvious player using it
tbqh, and I love him dont get me wrong, but I think a lot of his popularity comes from his character design and the fact that he dropped right at the peak of BG3/Astarion hype... the characters are very different but ppl didnt exactly care at the start it seems
