we should bring back the thing 30s movies did where scenes kind of just end and fade to black or crossfade into the next one. no more hard cuts, they are too much of a shock to the delicate temperament of the modern moviegoer

Every time it cuts to a new scene, I get so confused. Where are we? Is this right after the next scene, a day? Are these the same characters or is this some kind of anthology? Was teleportation involved? There’s no way to know
Sometimes this happened with a funny gag or joke in a comedy and it is so insanely foreign feeling I absolutely would love a confident director bringing this back
You joke, but I would love this. A conversation ending, and then both participants walking briskly off set while they drain the silver out is one of my all time favorite things in early movie making. They've got places to be! Life doesnt stop when the chatting does!
Fades, crossfades, wipes, iris shots, split screen - people don't fuck with the frame enough these days. We've actually gotten more conservative about a lot of filmmaking techniques in the past few decades
Star Wars does its part to keep them alive since screen transitions have always been a part of its style, but it's jarring to see them in a modern production, and then you go "Oh right, this is Star Wars."
It fucking sucks because it's shit like this that heightens already great movies into masterpieces if used correctly. It feels like film editing like this was cut to make more room/budget for VFX and the like. Or is there another reason?
Hell I would take even more easing into the next scene, like if it first faded to a narrator who said what the next scene would be and invited me to view it
that liminal period between the world of the stage and the world of cinema... listening to stagehands move behind the curtain between scenes, that pregnant pause to digest what just happened
I guess what I'm really saying is: they should bring back intermissions
You just reminded me of that episode of matlock when the cut scene was so abrupt i had a panic attack... Or better yet, I still almost pass out at the end of Star Trey the Next Generation "The best of both worlds: Part One" I mean the ending music had like 16 bridges...and part two was even better
and when two people are about to kiss, we should get a slow pan over to the window where a fireworks show is going off again. we used to make art in this country.
I did specifically write a transition like that into one of my scripts, because it's a horror script that takes place and mostly darkened spaces and it makes me crazy with my astigmatisms when a film goes from a dark room to a sunlit sky because I can't adjust that fast. Write what you want to see.

4th wall breaks with characters pushing them is a good laugh.
