I'm so tired of Lore invading everything. Mortal Kombat fans have been going off about lore since MK1 hit, and I just can't care about lore in such games as fucking Doom and Mortal Kombat. It's cool if there is some, don't get me wrong, but to care and in devs case cater to it... nah. Gimme gameplay
MK actually has some really fucking cool lore. All the parallel dimension shit, the elder gods, etc.
But, it needs to be as separated from the core experience as possible. Most of the cool lore in MK came out of separate modes (Konquest) or side games (like that beat 'em up I forgot the name of).
"You confirmed Doom 1,2 and 64 are canon, but everything in Eternal contradicts that, could you please explain that" is not what I would see as a sign that people want more story.
Yeah. I love Doom 2016 and Eternal, but I didn't touch the lore because it's as dry as a soda cracker. But the headline quote is funny, since story was something the forefathers of id decided needed to be cut back in the original.
It definitely puts a new perspective on Tom Hall being basically forced out of id for wanting the original to be more story-driven. Maybe not quite vindicating, but it makes the Romero/Carmack approach seem less "duh, obvious."
Maybe they just enjoyed writing the lore so much that they assumed people enjoyed reading it. Or maybe a lot of people actually did, I don't know. I'm not judging. I just know I've never thought to myself, "Man, I wish Doom had more cutscenes."
I thought they nailed the balance in Doom 2016, where there were almost no cutscenes and it was all relegated to (very brief, plain English, humorously written) codex entries.

Some of the lore bits in Eternal were fine, like confirming that Doom 1,2, 64, and now 2016 and Eternal are all the same continuity. And I did like the villainess somewhat implying she would bring back Doomsayer's pet bunny Daisy back. But yeah, Eternal went overboard with lore.
First question is always about the story since Eternal because it was badly written and needs clarifications for at least the details. The lore is even worse. Like Final Fantasy 12 worse.

I prefer the bad people do bad things or tell doomguy to do this or that, but doomguy only knows that he breaks stuff.
