I totally agree about the unsafe country lanes. I personally would not cycle them. Its a shame that there cannot be separate cycle paths like there is between Pontesbury and Minsterley for at least a 10 mile radius of the town, and speed reductions on smaller country lanes in general.
Yep, I've suggested before a route from the car park for Battlefield to Plex would open up countryside and provide a route for cyclists coming into town. Alternatively a cycle route along Ellesmere Rd from Albrighton in as far as Herongate (linking up with the Maltings) quite easily.
We are back with the 'build it and they will come', or 'build for what you want more of'.
Worryingly without these safer routes as viable alternatives at the same time, we will only get a NWR with infill housing and congestion will keep coming 🚗🚗🚗🚗🚗
The cycle path needs extending to Hanwood as a first step, but impossible to get to Shrewsbury without a bridge/tunnel. A council with a vision beyond 20th C road solutions is required
From hearing Matt and your cycle journeys, I'm not sure our attitudes used to be so bad in this country. I wonder what happened? Specifically to make the UK deteriorate compared with our European neighbours (I'm not talking about the B word, this goes way back past then)
Also from a social point of view having people living in town centres help to keep them vibrant and safe not just an idealistic idea of how a town should look pretty in the day but full of less nice things at night.
There needs to be balance between large & small shops no one wants to lug tins home on the bus but time is short and we want to do just one shop. Likewise if you live up in Battlefield you maybe don't wan to shop in town so Aldi and Tesco fit the bill. It's a planner's nightmare 1/2
I think it's to do with an attitude of wanting to be more like the US than Europe. It comes down to education we don't encourage language learning and it's been too easy to buy into and almost admire the culture of the US where the car is king and they almost speak the same language.
