I lost a friend for about 35 years. She lives in S. America. I used to say I kept FB because I didn't want to lose her again. We use a different platform to communicate and I'm not worried about losing her again. I'm getting close to leave. I hope Blue Sky works out.
I’m in groups on FB that publicize information faster and all in one place that I use for my job. I market my business on FB and IG. I don’t think there is a viable alternative yet, but when there is I’ll move.
1 thing I’ll really miss is the memories that pop up. I love being reminded of 1/2
of something my kid said that I posted or an outing with friends. It enrages me that it could have just been an amazing way to connect with people but greed won.
Offer to help boomers save their fb data, set up an inactive account with one public post with alternative contact info & help them with sign-ups & learning new platforms & finding community.
I got rid of Facebook and Twitter the day after the election and I know lots of people who have left Twitter – – I just don’t think anybody is reporting on it.
I don't care for censorship no matter how it's dressed so I've reduced my use of FB. I'll kept it to stay in touch w/family, some find tech confusing and others sadly are sheeple.
Change is hard. I know people who hate what Meta has become with a burning passion, yet their fear of change is greater than that hatred. Even greater than the fear for their own existence.
Then there's the Sunk Cost fallacy. They'd rather stay somewhere horrible than cut their losses and move.
... who are incapable of altering their views in the face of new information. Too many people are overloaded with the information they want to accept any information that is true, and we all suffer as a result of them succumbing to the desire for validation that overrides critical thinking.
So true! We are in a society with information overload. Critical thinking should be a core subject in all schools from primary school through to university.
We live in an age driven by computers, yet many do not get why computer experts are called "IT"; Information Technology. Computers are not about code or apps, but about handling *INFORMATION*. And handling information seems to be a lost art, as evidenced by the number of people... /3
There was a point where only a small minority could not keep up, but we've passed that point. And it's accelerated since schools stopped teaching the fundamental principles of many of those advances, leaving many with no understanding of how information works beyond "There's an app for that!" /2
FOMO is inevitable as we approach the point where technology advances faster than humanity can keep up with. And I've seen more and more people fall behind over the last few decades as that point has shifted to a lower percentile of humanity. /1
It's hard to leave but sometimes you have to decide what's more important, and I decided that my personal values are more important than the communities that I had on Twitter and Facebook.
There's also the fact that there's no similar alternative. If I don't like a Ford, I can go buy a Subaru, and get basically the same thing. If I don't like Facebook, where am I gonna go? None of the other platforms that have heard of have groups like FB does, which is the one thing I miss /1
about Facebook, I'm unaware of other SM that has a feature similar to Marketplace, and I'm unaware of any SM that offers chat the way Threads does. Each platform has a different personality and features. You're going to argue that BS has chat, which we are doing now, and that's true, but /2
I’d resisted leaving meta. Always an excuse. I closed my 3 IG accounts in early Feb, surprised that 3 weeks later, don't miss it.
Have deleted all but 10 people from my FB acct & all old posts, but still holding on as I sort my immigration in UK as there is an excellent group resource.
@hankgreen.bsky.social said on a recent video that he gets asked why he's still there, he responds he's trying to be a positive influence. I've seen others say they only stay because there are still people there that they want to connect with. It's better off left to the Nazis and foreign bots.
There's also the issue that some have created their own little community on Threads that's difficult to move over to here. I have people on Threads I talk with on a daily basis via comments and posts and we love it. It brings us some happiness and fun. The switch is more difficult than you'd think.

We need to help make change easier for people.
I also think platforms leaning hard politically one way or the other cause people to not move easily too.

I turned off Facebook for 5 years after one morning realising I had spent 2 hours of my time scanning the feed. Such a time waster 😆
