I'm having trouble figuring out how to market my Upper Middle Grade novel. The word count is 96k, but the characters are 14 or 15 (I keep changing it in each revision) and the voice might be more MG, though the content is meant for all ages.
Is this a problem? Idk what to say in query letters.
It’s tough to be sort of in that between space. There are some editors who are looking to fill the void, but not enough. I typically advise aging up or down depending on the voice to give yourself a better shot.
ugh same here!! they're definitely out there! I've had so much success at in-person events (like cons and schools!) where kids hang out. They're always so passionate and excited about finding new stories! I hope authors keep fighting to get books in their hands. <3
Because you sell Kids' books differently than to adults. And people don't want to always learn the difference or they don't know there's a difference.
The Kids' book sphere is just so far removed from the adult one that most booksellers I've known and worked with don't make the effort to learn.
I’ve always been thinking of writing middle grade, because I want to write the books my kids would read, but then I get nervous because what if I don’t do it’s justice? It’s such a hard age group to write for.
