When Andrew Carnegie, arguably one of the greatest philanthropists in US history died, the federal estate tax was around 70%. He wasn't a philanthropist out of the goodness of his heart, he directed his grants to causes he believed in, like libraries, to keep the feds from doing it for him.

Had this very conversation w cousin’s Xtain hubby (my fam is Evangelical) who says philanthropy over taxes. Said people wld donate for highways and public ed if govt stopped. I asked what he’d fund/donate w his $- he says foundations and charities are scams by unethical wealthy folks. So, nothing.
