Many of those red states were of course Mexico pre 1864 war = Texas, California, Nevada, Utah + parts of present-day Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming.

Mexicans crossing the Rio Grande are technically just going home.

The Pacific States and the Eastern seaboard States should secede and petition to be part of a greater Canada. What would be left of the USA would be around 30 states with about 90 million people, dwindling power and limited resources. Wouldn't that be fun to see?
