That's awful. It breaks my heart to hear about adults traumatizing kids the same way they did in the 80s, when I was a depressed, confused, bisexual middle school kid. It deeply affected me that no one would talk to us about sexual orientation or gender unless it was to make fun of people.

You should go, tell the kids you aren't allowed to say certain things, then clam up the rest of the visit. I guarantee they'll have a lot of questions for the staff after that, and they'll chatter among themselves. Then they'll look you up online. Etc.

This breaks my heart, for you and for the kids those cruel adults are trying to other by making them feel invisible and unworthy. I loved your book, not just as a Bay Area baseball fan, but for sharing Glenn’s full story on and off the field in such a caring way. I’m so sorry💔
