And a colleague told me once that opening presents with their kids on Christmas morning (!) was interrupted by device notifications from other teachers entering grades at the same time!!

The case against grades is sound & research-based, particularly the stress & anxiety caused by reporting to always-on grading portals. If schools still decide they have to use these tools, educators & leaders should make an intentional effort to diminish the negative impacts of grading & reporting!
One of my biggest struggles was being a math teacher in a low ses district where kids were in accelerated classes with no understanding of the basics. Couldn't grade them on the class standards like polynomial factoring because I had to teach them fractions first which killed time for other stuff.

Grading & reporting aren't essential to instruction.
No one method of grading and reporting serves all
purposes well.
Regardless of the method used, grading reporting
remain inherently subjective.
