Oh, and this is important: a locked academic building on a college/university campus is considered a private space. Entry into such a space would require a judicial warrant. If an uninvolved and uninformed resident opens a door, are authorities allowed to enter the private space without a valid warrant? Seems like that's what's happened in some cases.

As Sam said.

They are under no obligation to try to verify that any person giving them permission to enter or search actually has any actual connection to the residence.

They can also keep asking different people until someone says yes.
