Idk overwatch is the first game that really utilized team play for wins, while games like tf2 had team elements. You could still solo a match by yourself. Marvel rivals is more like that where every hero can solo teams if they play good enough. Overwatch relies on teamwork to progress.

Personally haven't played too many free pvp games but most I've seen just have them as mostly cosmetic stuff, so it depends how tempting that is for you, but I personally don't care too much.

Yes, they are both fully free to play with the exception of cosmetics and aesthetic items. In recent times, Overwatch 2 lets you play every hero with no requirements (previously you had to complete some challenges to unlock them, which was very stupid, imo).

they can both absolutely be played for free!! the transactions people talk about are usually for cosmetics (although at one point u could pay to play heroes earlier in overwatch) personally I've never spent a dime on rivals and it's been years since I've spent on overwatch

after all the broken promises blizzard has made with the overwatch community, i don't know if there's much left that blizzard could do... they lied to the community for years about PvE and the switch to OW2 was just to implement predatory business models popular with AAA companies now

I thin that competition for splatoon would be good, but I think that nintendo wouldn't know how to really handle it. they've really needed to compete directly franchise-to-franchise since sonic with mario in the 80s. I think overall it would help spl in the longrun but thwere would be hickups.

There's a couple things I wish OW and Splatoon copied from each other.

Splatoon could use an "arcade" rotation for all the challenges instead of limited time slots, and OW could look to Salmon Run for a repeatable PvE gamemode.

The closest competition that splatoon has was foamstars, but honestly the use of Ai art drove me and many players away to try the game, plus the game wasn't doing so hot in the beginning if I remember correctly.

Yeah I'm a little worried that overwatch will not balance that well (given that they usually haven't) and seem to be really throwing everything at the wall. but its still def way more positives i think people want to see them try.

I don't keep up w overwatch balancing but it sounds like they just tweak numbers not actually think about the impact from a game design standpoint and end up shooting themselves in the foot when a bad change causes a ripple effect

every overwatch patch notes has like 90% actually good changes and then they "microbuff" one character that was already in a healthy spot, which essentially ruins the balance patch (most notorious example being mauga a couple months ago). the developers seem kinda tone deaf at times.
