This is also why people calling for a hard-kinetic police response or a ban on future protests by Density Church are also wrong: whomever the police wish to criminalise or beat up or whatever, they first deny a protest licence

The most violent protest in recent memory was at Parliament in February and March 2022. Police were *right* to take a tolerant approach then, and the fact that they should have done much more to prevent it from turning into a literal shitshow does not change that
