Let me put this in a short version…between the deportation policy of the Trump administration and shutting down USAID, the religious battle lines have been drawn. and I predict this is going to be very intense and nasty.
Most of the Cardinals have been appointed by Francis. I don't assume that his successor will be as liberal but I do expect the next pope to be from a developing nation and roughly a 0% chance an American will be elected.
Pope Francis is not a “liberal.” He’s defended teachings on conservative hot button topics such abortion, women’s ordination, and homosexual marriage. My prediction: his successor will be younger, carry on his synodal reforms and hopefully less tolerant with the U.S. bishops.
Catholic social teaching doesn't map neatly onto the modern liberal-conservative axis. Francis has tended to focus more on the parts liberals like than his predecessors did. Even if his successor is more “conservative” that will likely mean sharp differences with the US right.
Exactly. The alt.Catholic right has made common cause with Protestant fundamentalism; their only point of tangency to Catholic teachings is opposition to abortion and to sexual diversity, and in any other matters they do not care what yhe Pope and yhe Church say.
I got ya; )
And you are right. It's really sad what has happened and concerning where we will go. I'm sure there are historical parallels but not in our lifetime.
The current Administration “Catholics” aren’t virtuous, they are greedy and self-serving - Catholics believe in civil rights and protecting immigrants.
And, Catholics for Choice support choice; 🩵 immigrants; accept & welcome all people; use pronouns
So the Trump administration say they are faith based. But when a bishop during her sermon taught the Gospel about mercy and caring for those in weakened position etc then they feel she mixes religion and politics and complains but they themselves explicitly mix religion into politics... 🤔
The “religion” they most definitely mix into politics is based on control, not spirituality or faith.
The bishop is spiritual, which is foreign to them and might make them unsettled because her words cause them to wrestle with their conscience for a moment.
