This is essentially what Pritker and Newsome are doing. Don't always agree with their politics but it's clear their positioning themselves to be face of Dem party simply by doing their jobs.

A backbencher Dem with ambition could easily get a LOT of attention by disrupting Dem leadership's lack of tangible opposition right now and positioning themselves as an alternative to it
