I understand the meaning as other Oriental philosophers have also voiced the same sentiment. Or as Charles Sumner put it
No true and permanent fame can be founded,
except in labours which promote the happiness of mankind.
For when you seek approval you seek fame in someones eye.
we've all been conditioned, since an early age, to be dissatisfied with our lot. Job, house, car, possessions. Bombarded with clever messaging, 24/7. Learn to recognize the difference. What you NEED vs what you WANT. Be happier!
In amongst all that propaganda there is never a word spoken of contentment nor of being frugal with your resources you do have as Samuel Johnson. (1709 – 1784) wrote
Where necessity ends, curiosity begins; and no sooner are we supplied with everything that nature can demand, than we sit down to contrive artificial appetites.
This is what they have been doing more prominently since the beginning of the 20th cent. That is whay every where you look is advertising.
Grief takes a long while to calm down. I still think about my fur babies that I have lost two to cancer and one from grieving over her mother's death, she just pined away.
Grief is something you never really get over you just come to terms with your loss in your own way so you can carry on. 😊
My sentiments as well.
For what is fame?
What is fame? The advantage of being known by people of whom you yourself know nothing,
and for whom you care as little.—Stanislaus.
I thank my parents, whose lives were shattered, for the freedom they allowed us. They worked so hard to rebuild their lives. Those really were the days.
SwPH vibes, -when a writer has to put words like this (above) in writing, on paper, in sand, for folk to learn by-those folk have been surrounded by warmongerers, thieves, liars, & snatchers of people's food, children, friends & coins, too long! -Crucial, stay in a good vibe. #SweetPeaceHeart #SwPH
Only till people realise that they also have another intelligence, Social Intelligence.
Our social structure to-day was created by the Socially Unintelligent. Not the Socially Intelligent.
Yes! I agree with the sentiments in that as well for in its own way it just saying what the other was saying just using different words.
As the outcome is the same Well adjusted men and women in their own right that are caring and kind to all.
When my son was 6, he asked me if the sunflower seeds he was eating would become a sunflower if he planted them. Of course I said yes. After he went to bed, I went to a home improvement store, bought a sunflower the size of the sun & planted it. The next morning, his world became extraordinary!
Your words are in line with what Pericles c 495–429 BC said
“What you leave behind is not what is engraved on stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.”
This is why I say your true wealth of life is the memories you create with those you love & friends.
This book carried me through parenting with such gentle and enduring guidance. My now-adult children are such beautiful, curious and courageous people. I highly recommend it for anyone at any stage of parenting
Though I myself have never read the book as it did not cross my path in life.
I too would recommend it for first time parents to have on the bookshelf to be read as life moves on as a guide for their own parenting of their child. Just going by that one page.
“ Ambition is but Avarice on stilts and masked.”
Walter Savage Landor. – Imaginary Conversations, Lord Brooke and Sir P. Sidney.
Striving for the extraordinary is nothing but ambition.
And then some of them will go out, make friends, and they'll be told by their friend's parents that you have to achieve and be successful which will always include being rich and such instead of just loving life and the ones you're with. Same at school.
Ask me how i know.
Of that I am well aware of.
As Walter Savage Landor. in his work Imaginary conversations, Lord Brooke and Sir P. Sidney wrote
“ Ambition is but Avarice on stilts and masked.”
They forget that true wealth is people not materials
True Wealth is created by memories with those you love & Friends.
Pericles left this for us to reflect on
“What you leave behind is not what is engraved on stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.”
I find the biggest issue is the assumption that children spend most of the time with their parents. While that used to be true at the start of the 20th century, and further back, as we move further into the 20th century to today this becomes less and less true.

Between daycare, school and sleep it might come out to about 5 or 6 hours, sometimes less depending on parental work hours, and the kid's extracurricular activities. Even weekends they might spend a handful of hours with parents in total.
Once teens however it's cut to almost nothing.

so if you expect nothing of them, they will become great on their own? No...expectations need to be reasonable but they must be placed upon children, or they'll still live in your basement at 30....
The only expectations I have of my children that they grow up into Caring men and women in their own right. No they did not stay at home they left home to experience themselves as men in the world as they followed their path in life.
