Every time I teach about standard language ideology in my Sociolinguistics course, I make it a point to stand on the table and bellow, "YOU HAVE AN ACCENT," to everyone. If they remember nothing else from my course, I sure hope they remember this.

It's so weird to me how people in Michigan don't realize we have an accent. Our weird guttural-stop-like-thing we do with the -t at the end of words is fascinating.
Do YOU have a favorite accent? I think the most beautiful voice I ever heard was from a woman who grew up in New York but then lived in Texas for a while? It was more like song than speech :D
Same class, different reason. I get up on the table to demonstrate salience - and hide behind it for its counterpart pertinence. Gotta make them remember somehow.
