we all know fanfics are written all over the world in different languages, but it's obvious that the ones in english are the most popular ones in fandom. sadly, not everyone knows how to speak this language, and non-english speakers in the fandom miss opportunities to read beautiful stories

many fanfics that have gone viral have their own translations to different languages so everyone can enjoy them, and of course, when someone asks you whether they can translate your fanfic it's such an honor, right? well, here comes the problem!

i'm not talking about *every* translator, but SO MANY of them (and i'm talking about my own experience here) care more about the attention they may receive than about the story itself or the writer. and this leads to two things that share the same issue: online translators

1. this one we know it. people that don't give a fuck about fanfic etiquette decide to take your story and post it WITHOUT PERMISSION to ao3 or probably wattpad (as many non-english speakers don't know how to use it) after copypasting your whole text in google translator

2. this one is the reason why i'm writing all of this. some people who actually ask for permission and it's granted take advantage of the original writers who DON'T understand the language their fanfic is being translated to and, again, they copypaste the whole text +

+ on a online translator instead of doing it from scratch (yes, if you want to translate a fanfic, BE LIKE NARA SMITH). this is incredibly disrespectful to both the writer who trusted you and the story that took days, weeks, months or even YEARS of writing
