That's exactly the kind of thinking needed when dealing with the Kremlins.

They are bullies. You have to project strength and preferably kick them once in a while, or they will begin to think you are weak... and prey.

Projecting weakness is far more likely to lead to catastrophe, even nuclear one.

The value of France's "nuclear umbrella" lies with deterring Russia from a conventional invasion of the Baltic states of NATO. (Or Ukraine if they become a member).

If France's assurances keep Germany, Poland & Ukraine from developing and deploying their own nuclear arsenal, all more the better!

That is correct. Several countries in Europe had their nuclear weapons programmes or even openly threatened they will develop such capabilities without real security. France can provide nuclear sharing with key allies in the threatened regions and resolve the issue.
