One would think that American’s would understand this since Canadians/English/Irish/Scottish/Australian all share language and in large part genetics. Language and/or DNA does not make a country, nor does it give license to invade a neighbor.
There is a reason why Australians, New Zealanders, Canadians & Americans speak English but are not English. It is the same reason some Ukrainians speak Russian.
People associating language with nationality is a meme at this point.
"Oh sorry I don't speak Mexican." Don't worry, only the unsensible will argue that Ukrainians "are Russians" because they speak Russian. If such was the case, most Americans should identify as English since they speak English.
It is that easy. North Italians speak German ... they are not Germans.
A lot of people in world speak English, that doesn't make them Great Britannic citizens.
It means that they live under the control of Russians and are forced to speak russian. For the elderly, it means the were part of USSR and were forced to speak Russian.
that is a tough one for US citizens to understand, in general many in the USA are only able to speak English and can't grasp a person being poly-lingual.

Take South Africa, for example, English is one of the official languages.
It would be ludicrous for Britain to invade on the pretext that they needed to protect English speakers from harm.
This is something that Putin and his Kremlin propagandists won’t admit.
