I have heard "AT Protocol" is the term. Flashes is Insta & the TikTok 'clone' looks to be @skylight.social which just applied to be on app stores.

The problem with "putting strain on the servers" as a talking point is well, optimization.

Most, if not ALL, summitsphere games are built with the Switch in mind and Toys for Bob rebuilt Crash 4: It's About Time so that it can run on weaker hardware. Optimization is key.

I recently heard about a federated (like Mastodon) Instagram alternative called Pixelfed. Was really hoping it would be the next big competitor, but nobody seems to be talking about it

Well, it's still using Bluesky as the "firehose" so to speak, just presenting them in a different style of interface. No instances to faff about with and worry about choosing, unless you care about that.

Yeah! It'd be cool to have a separate thing, but social media infrastructure is not something to mess around with so, I get why Flashes is going the way it has - and ultimately, it still provides the Instagram experience without the Facebook crust.

Just seems to be an alternate UX for media that filters posts with media. Doesn't seem to be official—integrates AT protocol.

The primary issue with media-centric third-party clients is that it'll hammer the bandwidth of Bluesky further. Until there's more than a single network, it'll struggle.
