The funniest thing is that -AFAIK—the man just likes to look like a walking skeleton, no motif, no big reason, just because he thinks it´s cool. Even with guys like Crossbones, you have a connection with the nickname.

Not designs as in visual designs, I don't think. I am not the biggest fan of the 2010 retcon tho, and so I mostly ignore it (thankfully so does canon).
