Modern screens alone have 9 times as many pixels as they did when Oblivion released. And that only accounts for a simple detail buff, any new art or greater variety in world assets are added on top of that.
I guess you are talking about the early "Gaming" 19" 4:3 TFTs that used 1280*1024 panels, but 1600*1200 20" TFTs were not uncommon just very expensive, but on the other hand CRTs had way higher maximum resolutions and performance for the same money, you just needed a strong back, arms and desktop.
But the real bottleneck was the GPUs you would need an SLI or Crossfire setup with a couple of very high end 512MB nVidia or ATI cards to play at 1280*1024 at what is considered today decent FPS. https://www.anandtech.com/print/1996/
that shit is not gonna be on disc anyway it can just as well be optional download more likely it's high quality audio for 8 languages you cannot opt out and also no incentive to optimize and use textures smartly. i'm 100% certain you could without a sweat remove 1/3 of filesize from any AAA game
and like notice fucking nothing. i dont think i need 4k pine needles i can nexus that shit besides it will be one of those "you need dlss + fg and with 2 weeks of fan-made ini tweaks and mods it might run 55fps with stutters" anyway
Yes, we need eastern Devs like Capcom to save us with wonderfully optimized games like Monster Hunter Wilds. (I should note that I love that game, but it runs like shit, even on console)

I CAN'T EVEN THINK OF A WAY TO UNOPTIMIZE THAT SO HARD
