As a country , Ireland has one of the worst records on service provision for disabled people in the European Union. We are due to pass the Optional Protocol on the UNCRPD on Nov 30th. Yet children’s disability services are grossly understaffed, and have impossibly large client lists. Meaning most

are constantly going from one waiting list to another & a complete absence of consistent support/ services. For some disabled adults there is no disability service. As a family carer/parent of disabled children for near 20yrs , I have never had respite because it’s not available to us.

Services are poor in terms of availability, one of my young people does not have access to any disability service at all. Yet at any moment carers in receipt of carers allowance can be called for reassessment . Despite the lack of supports & carrying out their caring role.

How carers are treated is a reflection on how disabled people are treated , but many fare even worse than carers . It cannot be a this or them approach to solve this long term issue. Either Ireland is serious about disability rights , or it is not. As a country who prides itself on equality it is

Ah well you gave me a laugh. At least it’s not an indecent proposal 😂😂. I think it’s a shared frustration at the injustice the disabled community has faced for decades.
