I am not totally opposed to a 3rd party in the future. Right now I think it's a horrible idea. We have a wolf at the door. We need one big gun to fight it off. A 3rd party would be turning the one big gun we have into two pea shooters.

The problem is that our big gun is jammed, hasn't been cleaned and oiled, and has a worn out firing pin. These are problems that can be fixed if everybody who is talking about third parties would get involved with the Dem party and reform it instead.
There are enough FDR Democrats-turned-Republican in the rural areas of America to make this happen. There are enough of us existing Democrats to fire the consultants and root out consultant-class Dems.
If only we would do it. This would bring the FDR Dems back into the fold.
I think there is some context to be added to discussions around third parties - being State policies towards primaries. I live in a state with open primaries, so I get the benefit of being able to influence which candidate the Dems put forward without being in the party.
The other context is whether a third party builds from grassroots vs top down. I agree top down is unrealistic. But there's nothing stopping Bernie style candidates from running as independents for Congressional seats and using that independence to their advantage.

It'll also take a lot of time to convince apathetic vorlters to vote again.
Follow the course AOC paves, and let's see where that goes.
