But that can’t happen while an ongoing invasion from Russia exists.
It will have to be some form of alternative to NATO membership for the time being.

It’s a fair point, I would just suggest that in 1954 or whatever, West Germany was key to protecting Western Europe against the threat of Soviet Invasion at that time.
I wish Ukraine could join NATO now but the risk of all of Europe being immediately engulfed in war is too high for the politicians.

I hope the leaders that needed to learn it have learned that if you make a deal without actually committing anything to it yourself when push comes to shove, the future deals you propose won't be taken seriously. Not sure they have quite yet though.
