People have brought this to the cosplay judges and the show runners attention. Please be aware that if he chooses to enter another craftsmanship cosplay contest to proceed with caution. If somehow I am proven wrong about this, I will delete and issue an apology.

But this is unacceptable. That award could have gone to someone who was in the Master category and made their cosplay on their own. They are the one who should have gotten this award, not him.

It feels like a lot of the new small cons I've noticed popping up in TX are run by people who aren't actually familiar with how to run a con and did zero research. They just copy/pasted another con's setup because that seems like how it's done, patted themselves on the back, moved on.

To add on, there have almost been times based on the time and age of a convention, we had no Master level entries and just left to awarding runner up novice, best novice, runner up journeyman/intermediate and best journeyman/intermediate. That's what was fair.

Hey person in the post here. as you stated I did not enter that division, I was in masquerade/walk on for just stage presence. Thats usually what I do (less pressure) I told them and showed them (have photos) I had to assembly the head peace after buying it. And the outfit came all messed up.

There's this weird idea that all contests need 3 divisions when 2 is perfectly fine for smaller events like this. It would've avoided this issue entirely. Cons are also hesitant to NOT give awards, which is weird. You can't make a qualified entry suddenly appear.

I run some TINY shows and I've learned it's stupid to copy larger crafts contests for them. You need to mold the contest to the kind of attendees you get. Maybe it's just Novice/Advanced divisions, maybe (at the teen one I do) it's Best Crafted and Best Closet awards. It takes experience and care.

Exactly! I helped bring skill divisions to Texas in the 00s and knew that 3 divisions was too many, so we copied ALA at the time who had 2. I spent a LOT of time reading the cosplay dot com forums, researching who was doing what. You really have to care about your audience when coordinating.

They definitely should not have given an award if they had ANY doubts that the outfit wasn't handmade. Period. You don't reward bad and cheating behavior. Simply omit the category. I completely agree with you there. This whole thing gives me the ick.

it feels like it was a bad idea to have three categories at all if one of them was so deeply under-represented. it feels strange to see smaller shows stretching themselves to fit a competition model that was designed for much larger contests.

also since a lot of us are kind of indulging in post-game quarterbackism here, it is worth noting and praising that the showrunner seems to be taking all of these lessons to heart and not shutting anything down. mistakes were made, yeah, but i feel it's important to recognize the accountability here
