It's a mix but primarily they are HTS, a Turkish backed Islamist militia (surprise). Syria is a mess and the moderates were all killed years ago, now the only thing resembling a good guy are the Kurds but turkey wants them dead dead

There is no right side in that war. I realized that about 10 or 12 years ago, especially after watching Obama dive all the way in to the Arab Spring and sod it all up. That war came from that, partly, and the Arab Spring has not had good outcomes.

US stepped in in 1994 by giving security guarantees to Ukraine. Stepping away is not that easy.
