I have read that the rebels are largely ex ISIS

if that is true, is there any reason to think the rebels are better, overall, then Assad ?

Not largely. Some yes, but HTS traces back to groups that refused to join ISIS. They are still extreme, but how extreme is hard to say and liable to change if they win. Either way, Assad has a very high kill count, and change of any kind is at least a possibility of things getting better.

I agree, we should be suspicious.
But
- being better than Assad is an incredibly low bar
- they evidently put a lot of effort into nation building. Thats a good sign
- we don't support them, and they didn't ask for it. Thus we we don't get a vote anyway..

I think that's because people know how bad the status quo is. Shaking that up at least offers hope for improvement.
Also it is a strategic setback for Putins imperial ambitions. A lot of people like that.
