My other explanation sounds crazy, but it is that Russian propaganda bots have infiltrated higher ed. Unfortunately, the explanation is that the Trump administration has asked the DOJ to investigate select large organizations—universities and foundations—about their support for DEI programs that do not align with Trump's priorities. The DOJ! One news example here:
