I sometimes console myself these days by remembering Freeman Dyson's "principle of maximum diversity" which says that "the universe conspires to make life as interesting as possible, just when things get boring." But if "interesting" includes the Crusades, WW1 and 2 and Trump, I will take boring.

Life unperturbed by societal disorder is already interesting enough for most people (though social orders good for some are generally bad for others so stable society can suck pretty bad, too).
