People have occasionally found microbes that can actually break carbon-fluorine bonds, as unlikely as that may seem. What's even more surprising is that we have some of them in our own intestinal flora!

Given that volcanoes spit out enough HF to cause sheep to die in Iceland after eruptions because of eating too much fluorine ... well, I'm not terribly surprised about that. C-F-bonds must have been around since life began.
