Wherever they're held, virtual options are essential. I know many international scholars at US universities who are afraid to travel outside the country for research or conferences because they fear they won't be let back in.

So holding conferences outside US is good, but needs virtual options.

Sure, but the virtual options for Seattle mean those of us in Sydney and East Asia need to stay up all night! Generally there's an assumption that the rest of the world conforms to US time zones.

I'm cool with hold the conference in Sydney, on Sydney time, and allow folks in the US who can't safely travel outside the country (e.g., international students, faculty, etc. at US universities) to attend on Sydney time.

My spouse works on big international nuclear physics experiments (many thousands of researchers), and for many years they've scheduled their meetings so every participating nation gets a fair share of business hours vs. middle of the night participation. It's feasible, but needs the will to be fair.

Thanks Warwick. And yes - much as I’d love to see everyone I’ve known and worked with over the last 40 years, my advice to all non-Americans is: don’t come here. Border crossing is risky even for well-off white people now. Each time I leave the country I wonder whether I’ll be able to get back in.

I imagine tourism generally will be down - I'm a UK citizen and I personally feel reluctant to visit during Trump presidencies and I've had a few friends express the same.
