It was easier to survive with some animals: milk, yogurt, curd, cheese and meat. To reduce meat, may be easy. To omit meat is already more difficult. To replace milk, yogurt, curd and cheese would be much more difficult. We would have to change our food completely.
Lacto-ovo vegetarians may have always existed, but vegans? Vitamin B12 is a problem for vegans, because it is found in meat, diary food, and some bacteria produce it too. For this reason vegans have to take artificial vitamin B12, as far as I know.
vitamin B12 is only produced by soil microorganisms. That is why it is given as a supplement to most farm animals, which never see a pasture. In fact, a non-vegan takes a supplement through meat, milk, eggs etc. A vegan takes it directly.
