We don't need to make Haidt look good. Asian families aren't stupid. The SHSAT was a stepping stone to upward mobility for low income Asians. Those UWS liberals have options and they still vote Dem. Voting GOP isn't the answer. But people vote vibes, not policy and the SHSAT change targeted them.
And while it's unfair, when COVID hit; Asian elders experienced an uptick in violence. Was it an increase greater than the overall increase in crime? Unclear. But the 1-2 of SHSAT reform and perceived increase of violence helped lock in a narrative that the Dems don't care and the GOP pounced.
Nothing about the SHSAT was changed (thanks to Dems) and if the expectation is that there can never be a single Democratic official who is concerned about a law with an unquestionably racist origin story and impact, it seems like that might be kind of bad for the party also https://bsky.app/profile/positivesubway.bsky.social/post/3lj53wg3was2u
The G&T testing was cancelled. I know, because my kid was studying for them. Maybe they didn't prevail on SHSAT with their remedial equity v equality actions. But they sure as heck altered our school planning.
G&T classes for 4-5 year-olds in NYC were expressly started to slow white flight, the mayor and chancellor openly discussed it in a piece that ran on the front page of the Metropolitan section 1/
The other thing going on here of course is that whatever David Hogg (lol) says obviously represents the entire Democratic Party whereas when people very close to the president wonder whether grandchildren of Hart-Celler immigrants are actually citizens the media is like “cleanup in Aisle 5”
