the least people can do is watch a playthrough and take notes, but at least experience the genre somehow.

YEAH! There are some games that are dificult to run or who knows why you can't run it but watching a playthrough(specially one with someone's commentary) can help alot!

Nothing like playing a game in the same genre and getting overwhelmed with the feeling that it's so much better than what you could make there is no reason to play what you want to make. Even worse when it's a free or old game.
