I actually hate both common responses to this. I hate Chatterton's RFK agreement but I ALSO hate everyone treating Ozempic as if it will get rid of fat people altogether (it won't) and that's the greatest thing in the world (thanks a lot, assholes)

Semaglutides are great for certain medical conditions and everyone should have access to them who needs them. AT THE SAME TIME treating them like a magical Thin Pill is exactly the problem with weight stigma that HAES is trying to avoid!
20% of people don't lose much weight on them. A currently unknown but significant number of people regain weight after a time. If you DO lose weight, 25% off a fat person is not going to make them thin. They will still be a (thinner) fat person with the same biases against them they had before
And even for people with the medical conditions that such medications are helpful for the conversation in the Dr’s office tends to go “You should consider this medication because it will help you lose weight” which is not actually helpful, especially if you find weight-talk triggering.
Nah. Because it's not about us and it never was. It's about people's desire to consider 'good health' and 'conventional beauty' as earned, not chance. It's about facing the fear of disability or fatness and wanting to pretend they will be spared, because they made 'good choices'.
This week’s family faultline is the suggestion that maybe weight has made me and my partner more susceptible to colds and flus. Maybe! But can we talk about the visibly sick child that was dropped off at our house 48 hours before my partner started showing symptoms? No?
I always get sicker with colds than anyone else around me. That was as true when I have been skinny and middle-sized as when I have been fat. Perhaps the fat is so powerful that linear time no longer applies.
It's a constant bit of static in my life that people, and family even!, will be 'concerned for health', but heaven forbid I should mention the constant drinking at every family gathering.
It's also very ableist. There are ppl who can't necessarily get 10,000 steps (a pretty arbitrary №) and/or have the resources to go to the gym. Then there are ppl with sensory issues with food. It's BS one-size-fits-all fuckery.

I am incredibly UNsusceptible to colds and I have now decided to say it's because I'm a fatty
