1850 - The California Fugitive Slave Law was adopted by the State Legislature. It authorized any slave owner claiming a runaway to obtain warrant for the slave's arrest.
About 100 of the schoolgirls were rescued by Nigerian armed forces and the British Royal Air Force. Some were released after negotiations with the Nigerian government.
Amnesty International has documented at least 17 cases of mass abductions in which at least 1,700 children were seized from their schools by gunmen and taken into the bush, where, in many cases, they were subjected to serious abuse, including rape.
