When the New York Times reporting consistently twists itself into the most crooked of shapes... the red flags from the Upside Down country are impossible to dismiss.
Utterly infuriating. This time, the whole article, not just the headline, was a waste. It should have been focused on the nasty toddler's longstanding hostility from 2019 with nothing short of servility (and minerals) acceptable.
Zelensky is angering Trump because he has courage, is more intelligent, has compassion, is better looking, and most of the world respects and genuinely likes him.
2/2
Will say it for zillionth time:
—Headlines, sub-heds, "social sells," prominent play make up most of the impact most stories have on most readers. (No one can read all stories in full.)
—These are chronic 'Pitchbot' traits of NYT politics
—No byline/accountability.
—Never explained in public.
Thanks for saying it again! It's my biggest frustration w NYT, the locus of where it harms the discourse. Few people read great reporting, all read the bizarre headlines. Were I an assignment editor at Atlantic or CJR, I'd have a team investigate the headline process at NYT (w basic question: wtf?)
@nytimes.com should provide credits for all major story headlines in the form of the author's initials in subscript at the lower right corner, which in online versions link directly to a feedback form that hits the inbox of the story writer(s), the editors & a volunteer from the Poynter Institute.
It is unfair to a lot of good writers at the Times when people complain about the Times as a monolith, but the editors who have the authority to make decisions like this never leave their own fingerprints on their work.
Spot on…they do damage to intergovernmental relationships and to a reporters credibility. In this case…it’s a not a “style”, the man is trying to project strength to keep his people united in the 4th year of a horror that we can’t truly comprehend!
Remember that Trump has a toddler brain and severe narcissistic personality disorder. Trying to please him is a sucker's game because even if you do, it's only temporary until Putin gives Trump his next orders
James, note that the first source quoted is unpopular Poroshenko’s team guy … finding a way to criticize the political opponent he lost to via an NYT reporter is the kind of manipulation the paper ought to be well alert to!
“As Trump and the USA abandon democracy and attempt to pilfer Ukraine’s resources, elected President Zelensky’s single handed fight to protect his land and citizens from Russia’s unprovoked invasion leaves fascist countries feeling the sting of an actual leader”. Fixed it.
Omigosh, that's pathetic. And I'm sure Zelensky's team is going to toss that story in the trash and keep working on creating a better arrangement with European leaders and other friends of Ukraine.
“It is not a good idea to criticize the leader of any nation, and particularly the leader of a nation doing the utmost to help you,” Mr. Yelisieiev said.
I mean, I agree as a strategy, but Zelenskyy didn't insult the leader of any such nation.
This is who Trump has sought to extort and destroy for the past decade. This is the heroic leader of a noble country. I stand with Ukraine and their bravery. May they see an end to all Russian aggression, and a surcease from Trump's reign of terror.
No one can make a deal with Trump. Trump is wholly owned and operated by Putin and you do your readers a disservice by pretending that he is independent of Russian demands. See his envoy to the UN back Russia against Ukraine today.
Shameful and utterly against American interests and democracy.
Angrying the puppet because he has the integrity to say no. This is why print media is dying. Attention grabbing headlines are not going to save fools.
The subtle..it's about upsetting Donlione,,not about rules and laws in place to guide them to good outcomes. THE NYT is worried about the Don getting upset....🤪
@nytimes.com you have SO lost your way. It's not whether your "analysis" is "fair or not". It's whether you have the courage to call out and stand up to a tyrant. The last thing Zelenskyy should be concerned about is his style. He is THE front line against the Axis (which the US has joined)
It's just an accumulation of anecdotes at this point but a growing number of people I know -- including several boomers -- are turning away from a lifetime of faith in / reliance on the NYT.
I don't have a new newspaper of record to offer you, but if you want hard, well-reported news that gets at key issues of the day, I recommend ProPublica.
oh no. the bad orange man is upset. he might get more upset. whatever shall i do? shall i be sad when he bleats out in all caps with excessive punctuation? oh my paws and whiskers!
fuck him, and fuck the @nytimes.com. useless piece of shit rag.
right - it is all his fault for the destruction of his own country!!! Our media is so out of whack it is not worth reading. Stay tuned here at Bluesky for actual news!
OMG!! Who, in his right mind, thinks it’s Zelenskyy’s responsibility to see that Trump isn’t “angered”? —> Why are we not concerned that Putin is “angering” Ukraine with his violent, unwarranted attacks? Why are we not concerned that Trump is “angering” the world with his support of Putin?😵💫
What's absurd on the practical side of writing this headline is not only does it enrage any sensible reader who understands the dynamic at play, it is nowhere near fawning enough to actually get into Trump's good graces. It plays both sides in a way that is guaranteed to please nobody. An own goal.
That rather beggars belief, doesn’t it? As if even the self-neutering men like Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz have done would avail Zelensky at all in the face of Trump’s zeal to sell out to Putin.
"Brilliant, savvy, wish we could do that here." That was Trump's response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He's been lying and pulling for Russia since. Blaming Zelensky's style for Trump's betrayal is outrageous.
What? Blaming the victim for Trump's perfidy. NYT should be sounding the alarm about US shift in support to the war criminal Putin, not suggesting Zelensky suck up to Trump!
History will be baffled by the headlines from these days. American democracy was being dismantled in front of their eyes, the biggest story of their lifetimes, and journalists were mired in minutiae. Failed themselves, their readers and their republic.
I canceled NYT subscription before election, and Wash Post recently. Still good reporters at both but they're let down by editors/ leadership in not opposing fascism. Headline writers at NYT have been atrocious for years - headlines often significantly different than what was actually reported!
Fuck the NYT. Our continuing to be outraged IS the problem. We continue to want there to be different rules. They are never going to see. Act accordingly.
Like appeasement has ever worked in history? It has not. Trump is the last person you should bow to. Never bow, hold to your values, be a moral person, stand up to the bullies.

Once more the time machine takes us back, to a famous Times headline of June, 1940:
Fair or Not, Churchill is Angering Hitler. Is His Style Hurting England?
Meanwhile he grows our allies over for criminal putin.

Krasnov "negotiation tactics" are based on gross bullying.
Zelensky can't be bullied. But he can punch back.
Tell me how that's different than this infuriating NYT headline.
Fixed it.
