Researchers from the Oregon Health & Science University report the 12 most restrictive states saw a more than 4% decline in OBGYNs compared to states where abortion access remained stable. Before Dobbs, the researchers note, OB-GYN supply trends were similar across states—but not anymore.
Over the last three years, this exodus has had major ripple effects: maternity wards shutting down, maternal health deserts expanding, and rising maternal and infant deaths.
One of the study’s authors, Dr. Jane M. Zhu, points out, “Many of the states where reproductive rights are most restricted already experience poorer pregnancy outcomes and disparities in care.”
She also notes that while we’ve had “surveys and anecdotal reports” of OBGYNs leaving their states due to abortion bans, this research marks the first empirical evidence of the trend.
I have serious doubt that people realize how on the margins physician supply is. If you lose 5% of the workforce that is a bfd; it will also snowball as the work piles on the 95% remaining.
When asked about the risk ... Georgia Representative said "we don't want those doctors" ... the "those" was up for interpretation, but as a woman, felt like the quiet part out loud ...
These are the states most concerned with increasing the birth rate. But pregnant women can’t find doctors to deliver babies. The result is increasing maternal AND infant mortality. Great job, guys.
Off-tangent question here … will this type of research lose funding/not get funded due to the unacceptable words it [would] feature, like accessible, women, female?
Read comment posted by Dr. Amos about the Professional Organizations responsibility in all of this. You don't need to read the article to get the big overview. This is a great "how to fight against" anti-choice laws; it is not about abortion, it is about general access to women's healthcare. PERIOD!
I think the Christian Taliban approved policy in red states is that if you lose a wife or child (sometimes it's the same person in WV, AR, AL and MS) in child birth or due to some type of woman-related illness, you just get a new one.... just like you would with a TV or a coffee maker.
Since the article is paywalled - is the usual supply chain the medical schools in the state? If so, do they expect an acceleration of the trend when that pipeline also starts to diverge between blue states and red states? OB/GYNs leaving the state + OB/GYNs never minted?
