Eye for an eye is also misinterpreted by Christians who love to quote from the Tanakh but keep getting it wrong. Eye for an eye isn't a call for vengeance. It means to not punish excessively. If someone steals something, they pay for what they stole. They don't get the death penalty.

The two times I heard people ask for his favorite verse. He hedged and dodged and never gave one so I didn’t know that he decided on an eye for an eye, but why would anyone be surprised?
