As explained in the other comment, ActivityPub and ATProto are the two "big players" in this space, in a sense. AT is better designed to work at a worldwide scale (which is also sadly why we don't have private posts yet, but that's being worked on).

Imagine your profile as a personal website/blog, and the Bluesky app as a web browser. Skylight would be a different browser in this sense, just with a different interface and features. @flashes.blue is another such "browser", but it looks and works more like Instagram.

This goes even beyond a Bluesky-like experience. For instance, @stream.place is currently in development, and it lives on the same network as Bluesky, so it can integrate with data that already exists.
Another example: @sonasky.app has https://ref.sonasky.app, which associates refsheets with your account.

It is. It's the protocol bluesky is based on and that allows any person implementing the protocol to be able to integrate with all the other applications of the ecosystem.
The two protocols for at are ATProto and ActivityPub. Then if you are on bluesky, you will be able to follow a user elsewhere
