I’m especially tired of midlevel trying to pigeonhole every comp into “this weapon is a worse decav/stamper” with no deeper insight. The meta is evolving, and especially below top level your comps are much less restricted. Of course games will feel bland when you play them the same way for months.

One thing I’ve found is to ask questions about what a specific comp is STRONG/WEAK at, instead of if it’s better/worse than .

It lets you learn more about how to build comps, e.g. “Oh, our comp lacks a pencil answer” instead of “oh, well i’ll just go sword bc sword good”

EVERY comp has tradeoffs, even the meta ones. You build the next meta/counterpick through learning those tradeoffs

In general my philosophy with metas is that weapons aren't ranked by individual strength, but by how easy they are to fit into comps. I think most weps are viable, but it's a path of most/least resistance type of thing.

Splashability is how I consider things at the top of the meta primarily.

I think both "you need to run all top tiers to win" and "the meta is fake" aren't accurate, there's a middleground that is the meta should be a benchmark and your comp should be based around how it fits into this, and that you can make things work as long as you're smart about it.

I'm coaching a coolerless team, so I asked them what weapons they played and suggested a composition based on those weapons that works into the meta, which is a comp that can stall out Cooler'd pushes (Crab Tank, Inkjet, Ballpoint) and play together well with chip.

I think it's easier to categorize playstyles and what you want to do when you can understand what the most common archetypal playstyles are in every Splatoon meta, and then broader sense how your comp, off-meta or on-meta, fits into that and how to play around things, etc.

Basically, nuance.

Lastly, I think that the meta changes depending on skill level of you as an individual and as a team, and I think that low level players especially can gain more by not playing the core meta, because sometimes the core meta is unintuitive.

I think we could benefit as a community by looking at comps

as full units with different playstyles, goals, objectives, etc. rather than as different variants of the same goal, playstyle, objective. Rushdown is the only compstyle that is commonly understood that people commonly can say has a different playstyle, but even slight difference is meaningful.

YEAH! I will be real that many of these players are INSANE onetricks. But still, we shouldn’t be instantly dismissing players that use unique options with “just learn sword instead” or “can you go zap this game pretty please.” Like, the point of pickups should be to learn to play with new styles!!

I'm kinda on both ends of the conversation, I think there are a lot of really interesting options that I'd like to see experimentation done with, I dont think any weapon is plainly "bad", only situational, but I also only play stringers and I wish I had more options while still sticking to the bows
