Google Maps has become dangerously distracting.

The app now issues alerts – with loud chimes – prompting users to confirm incidents like stalled cars.

The alerts direct drivers to look away from the road, and there’s no way to turn them off. That’s reckless UX.

To be fair, mandatory driver assistance aids in modern cars can be equally distracting. I guess with all things we just have to learn not be distracted from the task in hand. As we say in flying "Aviate, navigate, communicate"

Did they just learn that Waze exists? You don’t have to actually confirm the alert, just keep driving it’ll disappear in a few seconds.

Google owns Waze. The point is there should be an option to disable this feature for people like me who don't want to be distracted by pointless requests while driving.

I use Google Maps almost exclusively as part of Android Auto on my EV. It doesn't pop up every single event, and there is an option for notifications on silent. I'm never bothered by them, even if they do pop up. Seems like much ado about nothing to me... or a gripe by an exclusive apple-only user?

I actually almost never use Apple Maps, I've always leaned toward Google for its business data. Maybe the interface is especially obnoxious on CarPlay? If the alerts were actually useful, that would be different, but I don't need to know about every stalled car that's well clear of the roadway.

I don't either, so I don't pay attention to most notifications. I do not pay attention much to my phone/map while driving, any more than I do to adjust climate settings, wipers, blinker, or checking speed. I wish articles like this would focus on dangers posed by those who drive with phones in hand.

I've never owned an Apple product or used Apple apps, but the pop ups are ridiculous. At least allow the user to select which ones they want...as was the option when it was still Waze.
